Aanvankelijk nam hij songs op onder de naam The Weeknd en verspreidde die via Youtube, maar zijn identiteit bleef lange tijd een goed bewaard geheim (cfr. Burial). In Maart 2011, releaste The Weeknd een gratis album van 9 songs, 'House of Balloons', die goed ontvangen werd. Dit album maakt deel uit van trilogie naast 'Thursday' (Aug '11) en 'Echoes of Silence' (Dec '11).
