Tot mei onderzoeken we welke oplossingen werden bedacht voor de mobiliteitsproblemen van grote buitenlandse steden ter inspiratie voor de toekomst van de Noord-Zuidtreinverbinding in Brussel. Na lezingen over Parijs (l’Observatoire du Grand Paris), Birmingham (Prof Phil Jones) en Istanbul (Jean-François Pérouse), buigen we ons nu over het felbelaagde en delicate project Stuttgart 2, uitgelegd door gastspreker Enrico Gualini, docent Stadsplanning aan de universiteit van Berlijn en kenner van het project terzake. Stuttgart 21 is een Duits stedelijk spoorlijnproject dat het spoorwegknooppunt van de stad Stuttgart volledig wil herdenken en moderniseren door middel van de ombouw van het centrale station -momenteel een eindstation- tot een ondergronds doorgangsstation met verbindingen tussen de stad, de provincie en andere grote internationale steden. De werken begonnen in 2010 en duren tot 2020 maar een gigantisch burgerprotest stak stokken tussen de wielen wat leidde tot belangrijke betogingen en uiterst vijandige reacties in 2010 en 2011. De lezing van prof. Gualini is een kritische analyse van de manier waarop de belanghebbende partijen proberen van een democratisch draagvlak te herstellen, zowel in dit bijzondere geval als met betrekking tot de planning van andere grote openbare werken. De toekomst van de Noord-Zuidverbinding valt hier ook onder, zoveel is zeker...
