Daarin ligt de mogelijkheid van een democratische samenleving.)* \- Collectif, *Manifeste pour une démocratie du travail*, Paris 2026 Het kunstencentrum Recyclart werkt samen met het Goethe-Institut, de Jan van Eyck Academie en Manifesta 16 Ruhr op zaterdag 27 juni 2026 voor een experimenteel formaat: een georganiseerde busreis van Molenbeek naar Gelsenkirchen, via Maastricht. Deze dag biedt de gelegenheid om het thema werk te verkennen, omdat daar de fundamenten van onze democratische samenleving worden gesmeed. De vraag naar onze toekomstige levens- en werkstijlen leidt ons naar drie plaatsen die diepgaand zijn gemarkeerd door de industrialisatie van de 19e eeuw, die hebben geprofiteerd van verschillende vormen van arbeidsmigratie en die op verschillende manieren de huidige structurele transformaties ondergaan. kunstenaars en curatoren zullen met elkaar in dialoog gaan, waarbij ze een gemeenschappelijk perspectief delen: in plaats van werk en migratie als abstracte onderwerpen te benaderen, zullen ze spreken vanuit hun eigen ervaring, als kinderen van immigrantenarbeiders of over de geschiedenis van hun familie, gekenmerkt door verplaatsing in de context van kolonisatie. Bovendien hebben we theoretici uitgenodigd die, vanuit een stedelijk perspectief, Molenbeek, Maastricht en Gelsenkirchen analyseren en de huidige structurele transformaties belichten. In *Sība*, Younes isolates vocals from (arab) pop, raï, and (t)rap, stripping away all instrumentation and context to craft new minimalist, futuristic arrangements. The voices, slowed and severed from their linguistic roots, lose their meaning and become enigmatic sound. Our bus journey starts with **Sarra El Massaoudi**, who brings voices from Molenbeek to the forefront and provides context. Belgian‑Moroccan people of all generations speak about living in a cultural in‑between and the multiplication of identities. In cooperation with the Jan van Eyck Academie, we will present a reading by **Yannic Han Biao Federer**. He will read an excerpt from his novel *TAO*, a search for traces along biographical ruptures and colonial crimes, spanning from China via Indonesia to Hong Kong and southern Germany. **Nathalie Muchamad** will present a work centred on breadfruit. Closely intertwined with the history of imperial botany and colonial exploitation, the fruit has long been marked by associations of deprivation and oppression. Nathalie’s project reconnects breadfruit with ideas of resilience, autonomy, and climate adaptation. In this context, **Marente van der Valk** will take breadfruit as a starting point and prepare a shared lunch for us. The Maastricht programme will begin with a guided tour led by the director of the Jan van Eyck Academie, **Hicham Khalidi**, and is organised **in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Netherlands**. On the way to the Ruhr region, **Markus Ambach** will provide insights into the region’s urban development. In Gelsenkirchen, **Gürsoy Doğtaş** will welcome us and invite us to explore three exhibitions he has curated on different aspects of migrant labour as part of Manifesta 16 Ruhr. This 16th edition in the Ruhr region marks the 30th anniversary of the European Nomadic Biennial. It unfolds across 12 former or disused church buildings and brings together more than 100 participants—artists, creatives, collectives, and educational initiatives—deeply rooted in the local communities of the Ruhr region.
