Mdou Moctar werd geboren in Abalak, in de Azawagh woestijn van Niger. Hij leerde zichzelf spelen op een eigenhandig geknutselde gitaar. Geïnspireerd door de Ishumar (afgeleid van het Frans ‘chômeur’: de Nigerezen die in de stad wat geld gaan verdienen en dan naar hun dorp terugkeren) trok Mdou naar Libië om wat te klussen waar hij andere gitaristen ontmoette. Gewapend met een ‘echte’ gitaar keerde hij terug. In 2008 nam hij in Nigeria zijn eerste album op ‘Anar’, dat via de Mp3 netwerken in Westafrika een onmiddellijk succes werd. De track ‘Tahoultine’ werd hernomen op de compilatie “Music from Saharan Cellphones” in 2013. Zijn eerste internationale release ‘Afelane’ bracht hem dit jaar voor het eerst naar Europa waar zijn rauwe rockende sound inslaat als een zandstorm! Het blijkt een vruchtbare tandem, na één maand tijd zijn twintig demo's ingeblikt en sindsdien laten ze elkaar niet meer los. De band wordt nu vervoegd door een oerstevige ritmesectie: Mirko Banovic en Sam Gysel (beiden oa Arno). Het zijn heerlijk rauwe, urbane klanken met een onweerstaanbare hedendaagse groove.
