Vertrekkende van het contrast tussen het goedkope en eclectische ontwerp van de ‘Docklands Light Railway’ en de dure en doordachte uitbreiding van de ‘Jubilee Line’, zal Hatherley vervolgens dieper ingaan op twee recente voorbeelden: de uitbreiding van de 'East London Line' doorheen Oost- en Zuid-Oost Londen – een overwegend arme buurt, ontsloten door slecht ontworpen nieuwe infrastructuur- en het ‘Crossrail’-project, momenteel nog een werf. De architectuur van dit laatste project werd reeds uitvoerig bekritiseerd omwille van de breuk met de kwaliteitsvolle ‘Jubilee’-uitbreiding terwijl de gevolgen voor de sociale huisvestingsproblematiek nog onderbelicht bleven. Het officiële verhaal verkoopt het Crossrailproject als een ontsluiting van de achtergestelde Thames Gateway-wijk in Oost-Londen, maar is dit geloofwaardig?
