Molyvann’s leven en praktijk en ideaal van een ‘nieuwe Khmer architectuur’ uit de jaren 50-60 vallen samen met de turbulente geboorte van het onafhankelijke, moderne Cambodia. Na zijn studies in Parijs lonkt de uitdaging om nieuwe steden vorm te geven over heel het land maar bij de machtsgreep van de Rode Khmer in 1970 valt hij in ongenade en moet hij vluchten naar Zwitserland. Bij zijn terugkeer in 1991 treft hij een mentaal en fysiek verwoest land aan. Veel van zijn bouwwerken zijn vernield of verwaarloosd.
