Architecture and urbanism… rarely have we developed mechanisms to enable resistance… Therefore, in the first instance, we must substitute the role of expert for that of the citizen. (…)The challenge in the future will be to take on legislations and develop new modes of collective action, as well as urban spaces for citizenry.” (interview Architecture Now)* De jonge Venezolaanse architect, stedenbouwkundige en kunstenaar Alejandro Haiek Coll is mede-oprichter van het bureau LAB.PRO.FAB (Project and Fabrication Laboratory) en The Public Machinery. Hij is ook docent aan de faculteit voor architectuur en stedenbouw van de Central University of Venezuela. Hij wordt omschreven als één van de meest vernieuwende alternatieve jonge stedenbouwkundigen van vandaag en een veel gevraagd gastspreker en docent over heel de wereld. De kern van zijn praktijk is de overtuiging dat architectuur een politieke en sociale daad is. Produceren voor de massa, niet in massa; vertrekkende van de belangen en kennis van de burgers en sociale bewegingen. Een aanpak niet van bovenaf maar van onderuit, gericht op initiatieven die ontstaan in de gemeenschap en verder gestuurd worden om de sociale situatie en de bebouwde omgeving te veranderen.
