Hij leerde het klappen van de zweep in experimentele rock-gerichte bands als Henry Cow of Art Bears en speelde in andere spraakmakende formaties als Massacre, Skeleton Crew, Keep the Dog, Tense Serenity, Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, Eye to Ear en - zeer recent - Cosa Brava. Hij componeerde voor films en choregrafen en zijn werk werd uitgevoerd door Ensemble Modern, Hieronymus Firebrain, Arditti Quartet, Robert Wyatt, Bang on a Can All Stars, Concerto Köln en Rova Sax Quartet – om er maar een paar te noemen. Hij speelt enthousiast zowel met iconen uit de hedendaagse muziek als met onbekende jonge muzikanten. Voor het ogenblik leidt hij Gravity Band, Eye to Ear (zijn groep voor filmmuziek) en Cosa Brava. Hij geeft les in Oakland California (Mills College) en aan de Musik Akademie in Basel.
