Bitterkomix is slegs vir volwassenes.” Zelfs zowat 20 jaar na het einde van de apartheid is hier te lande slechts weinig bekend over Zuid-Afrikaanse strips. In de jaren negentig ontwikkelde zich een kleine onafhankelijke stripcultuur rond het ondertussen wereldvermaarde magazine Bitterkomix uit Kaapstad, uitgegeven door Anton Kannemeyer en Conrad Botes. Het grootste deel van de kunstenaars in deze tentoonstelling heeft in Bitterkomix gepubliceerd (behalve Sebastian Borkenhagen en de gebroeders Tantraal). Het is het langst bestaande onafhankelijke stripmagazine in Zuid-Afrika. Centraal in de strips staan de aanhoudende ongelijkheid, de politieke corruptie, sexisme maar ook gewone verhalen uit het dagelijkse leven. Een ander accent ligt op het snijvlak van taal en poëzie met grafiek en visuele kunst. De gebroeders Tantraal schrijven over het dagelijkse leven in een door Japanse manga beïnvloede stijl en maken illustraties voor de poëzie van Ronelda Kamfer. Het werk van Sebastian Borkenhagen, de jongste auteur van de tentoonstelling, is gewoon een categorie op zich. Het geheel geeft de verscheidenheid aan stijlen weer van een bloeiende beeldcultuur, die slechts sporadisch haar weg vindt naar Europa. Stilistisch variëren de invloeden van Hergé en Robert Crumb tot hedendaagse Japanse, Franse en Amerikaanse prenten. Kom dit ontdekken!
