In 2013 braken er protesten uit in het centrum van Kiev nadat de regering van president Janoekovitsj had besloten de associatieovereenkomst tussen Oekraïne en de Europese Unie op te schorten en tegelijkertijd de economische banden met Rusland te versterken. Maanden van demonstraties en protesten, bekend als De Euromaidan, escaleerden tot de Oekraïense revolutie van 2014, die uiteindelijk resulteerde in de omverwerping van Janoekovitsj en de vorming van een nieuwe regering. Deze gebeurtenissen gingen vooraf aan zowel de annexatie van de Krim door Rusland in maart 2014 als de nog lopende oorlog in Donbass. In samenwerking met de burgers van Kiev vormt **['Let Us Not Fall Asleep Asleep While Walking'](http://daviddenil.com/work/letusnotfallasleepwhilewalking/)** hun ervaring om tot metaforische voorstellingen waarin de tijd bevroren lijkt te zijn maar de dromen van hoop nog steeds blijven hangen.
