Opgericht door Jonathan Uliel Saldanha (van HHY & The Macumbas) en de krachtige trompettiste Florence Nandawula, verenigt deze steeds veranderende groep een uitgebreide familie van medewerkers zoals percussionist Sekelembele (Fulu Muziki) en danser/performer Exoce, afkomstig uit de creatieve smeltkroes van Nyege Nyege. Een tweekoppige entiteit, in het leven geroepen en aangestuurd door het festival Astropolis aan het einde van 2020 om een project te lanceren met een doordachte en ruimtelijke identiteit. Vanuit dit vertrekpunt, geïnitieerd door de instelling uit Brest, volgde begin 2021 een residentie in de Parijse studio’s van Red Bull Music Academy en de opbouw van een verhaal dat zich ontvouwt als een epische, gelaagde vertelling, geïnspireerd door de krijgerszang van het Fang-volk uit Centraal-Afrika (waar de vader van Matthieu Ruben vandaan komt) en de codes van industriële muziek, postpunk en dub, die de twee muzikanten nauw aan het hart liggen. De zanger van NZE NZE draagt deze erfenis met trots uit en haalt uit de geografische afstand, veroorzaakt door de politieke context in Equatoriaal-Guinea, een bepalende inspiratiebron voor dit muzikale project. Feiten en fictieve tegenverhalen botsen hier om een dystopische toekomst te suggereren en met woede de ethische en economische kwesties bloot te leggen die voortkomen uit het koloniale verleden.
