Dit jaar wordt hij 75, hij leefde zowat 20 jaar in New York op straat, wat mee zijn free jazz dat specifieke weerbarstige, moeilijke compromisloze karakter meegaf. “Gayle speelde voor geld op straat maar hij deed dat niet met leuke deuntjes die de voorbijgangers konden plezieren en eventueel verleiden tot een bijdrage in de vorm van wat kleingeld. "They’d stop to hear a song, but I’m not playing songs. What I hear is the traffic. Everybody in New York hears it, but it’s really vivid in my head. Horns and children and birds, too – I hear them so clearly, they hit me so hard. The subway roar, the jackhammers. Not that they’re so loud but they stay there. The trucks and the sirens and the screeching and the hollering and the brakes, all that jagged movement, the *Arggghhhh!*" Als er een manier is om de muziek van **Charles Gayle** te beschrijven dan is het misschien wel die ene kreet. Muziek geïnspireerd door de geluiden in zijn hoofd en de gevoelens in zijn hart. Geen gemakkelijke muziek voor de luisteraar. Confronterend. Schijnbaar chaotische zieleroerselen. Losgeslagen muzikale gedachten. Wie zich ervoor openstelt, gaat mee op de trip, hoort de blues- en gospelinvloeden. Wie op zoek gaat naar meer houvast, is gedoemd om te verdwalen, of af te haken.” (J. Revalk in Cobra.be). Sinds 1988 bracht hij meer dan 30 platen uit en was te horen naast kleppers als Cecil Taylor, Sunny Murray, William Parker of Henry Rollins band. De samenwerking met Giovanni Barcella en Manolo Cabras is niet occasioneel of vrijblijvend: ze toerden reeds samen en bouwen aan een gemeenschappelijk project op langere termijn.
