Hoewel men aanvankelijk de aandacht enkel richtte op het wegennet, dragen de Duurzame Wijkcontracten nu actief bij tot de aanleg van echte ontmoetingsplaatsen. De werkwijzen die werden ontwikkeld waren in eerste instantie vrij eenvoudig, maar gaandeweg hebben ze steeds meer aan diepgang gewonnen. Onder de noemers reliance, reflexiviteit en manoeuvreerkunst belicht dit boek het specifieke karakter van deze werkwijzen, die werden ontwikkeld om de Brusselse buitenruimte de (her)veroveren.
