Every Island and Bebe Books are pleased to announce the launch of the Shifting Territories publication, which compiles the insights, performances, and visuals from this transformative project. The launch event offers an overview of the project's two-day journey, while providing a practical guide for applying its concepts in your own work.
Shifting Territories, developed by Every Island and Bebe Books, is a nomadic, performative platform designed as both a movable installation and a framework for exploring the notions of landscape and dwelling. The project challenges traditional domesticity, viewing it not as a fixed concept tied to a house but as a social construct shaped by interactions and performances in urban spaces.
The project reflects on how the boundaries between public and private spaces have blurred, turning urban landscapes into stages where domesticity is performed through acts like squatting, housing protests, and resistance to hostile architectures. It questions conservative, cis-heteronormative views of home and explores how marginalized communities, particularly queer individuals, can create new ways of belonging in spaces where traditional forms of domestic life may be unattainable.
Inspired by Mierle Laderman Ukeles’ “Manifesto for Maintenance Art 1969!”, the project also examines the role of cultural institutions in addressing domestic issues, proposing the temporary domestication of public spaces like galleries and stages. Through a series of performances and spatial interventions, Shifting Territories seeks to test new forms of dwelling in various landscapes, using its movable installation to connect with and reinterpret its surroundings.
This publication launch offers a glimpse into these explorations and serves as a resource for rethinking domesticity and space in contemporary practice.

Bebe Books is an ongoing collective experiment that operates through shared agency in creative labor, care and friendship in the field of communication design and publishing. By working together, we resist the modern myth of a singular heroic designer - what Ursula K. Le Guin referred to as “the narrative of the arrow or spear.” We consider ourselves as a queer collective not merely as a statement of identity, but as that of methodology. Besides the fact that the majority of our constituents are gender-non-conforming, we use our creative capacity and resources to design a context – be it a book, a gay bar, a temple, or a political campaign – where diverse marginalized experiences and voices can be represented.

Every Island is a design collective based in Brussels, investigating performativity in space through ephemeral architectures and installations. Using ambiguity as a design tool, we think of space as scenography for transitions, of roles, of stages and of meanings. Within each project, materiality is conceived as a reminiscence of hidden memories, images, sensations. Every Island was formed in early 2021 by Alessandro Cugola, Caterina Malavolti, Damir Draganić, Juliane Seehawer, Martina Genovesi.
