Mdou Moctar est né à Abalak, dans le désert de l’Azawagh au Niger. Autodidacte, il s’est bricolé sa propre guitare. Inspiré de l’Ishumar (dérivé de ‘chômeur’: les Nigériens qui vont gagner un peu d’argent en ville, puis reviennent au village), Mdou part Lybie. Il y rencontre d’autres guitaristes. Et il revient, armé d’une ‘vraie’ guitare. En 2008, il enregistre son premier morceau au Niger ‘Anar’, succès instantané en Afrique de l’Ouest via les réseaux Mp3. La piste ‘Tahoultine’ a été reprise sur la compilation “Music from Saharan Cellphones” en 2013. Son premier album ‘Afelan’ l’a emmené en Europe pour la première fois cette année, où ses sonorités rock brutes frappent comme une tempête de sable ! Think Of One, S.W.A.N.) prend forme cette année lors d’une première session de travail à Kinshasa. Le tandem s’avère d’ores et déjà fécond, après tout juste un mois d’enregistrement de ses vingt démos. Depuis, le groupe est inséparable. Une section rythme, ultra puissante, s’est jointe à lui: Mirko Banovic et Sam Gysel (les deux ont joué e.a. avec Arno). Sonorités délicieusement brutes, urbaines, avec un groove irrésistiblement contemporain. Même le pape va bouger la tête !
