PRESS PLAY – BEBE BOOKS 

Welcome to the Press Play ▶️ workshop! In this 3-hour session, we will explore the question “what are the queer processes of printing?” through our method Press Play, a nomadic printing service equipped with various print techniques operated by Bebe Books. 

Press Play reimagines the idea of printing by featuring slow, low-tech, and hacked print techniques. This approach challenges the problematics of the print culture in the West, which often prioritizes speed and efficiency at the expense of workers and their social relations. By using diverse tools and mediums, such as rice cookers and cassette tape recorders, we aim to disrupt the normative rhythms of production and highlight the etymological meaning of “publishing” as “to populate.” 

In our workshop, each participant will engage with different print techniques, making production a collaborative and negotiative process. Inspired by live-action role-play games, our print house becomes a dynamic space where roles and responsibilities are fluid and co-created. 

Participants will be encouraged to experiment and interact with the facility in various ways. Even mundane prints, like tax invoices and instruction manuals, can be transformed through this queer process. Using mock-up bank notes issued by Bebe Books, we'll explore alternative economic models and systems of exchange beyond consumerism.
