Ce guitariste, compositeur, improvisateur et multi-instrumentaliste connu pour la ré-invention de la guitare électrique, processus qui a débuté avec ses Guitar Solos en 1974. Il a fait part de groupes experimentaux iconiques tels que Henry Cow et Art Bears ou encore Massacre, Skeleton Crew, Keep the Dog, Tense Serenity, Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, Eye to Ear et – très récemment - Cosa Brava. Il a composé pour films et chorégraphies et son travail a été interpreté par Ensemble Modern, Hieronymus Firebrain, Arditti Quartet, Robert Wyatt, Bang on a Can All Stars, Concerto Köln et Rova Sax Quartet – pour en nommer que quelques uns. Il partage la scène tant avec les grands de la musique contemporaine qu’avec des jeunes musiciens encore totalement inconnus. En ce moment il dirige Gravity Band, Eye to Ear (son groupe pour musique de film) et Cosa Brava. Il enseigne à Oakland California (Mills College) et à la Musik Akademie (Basel).
