Fasciné par la présence physique de l’argile, sa matière, sa plasticité, Jean représente des monstres auxquels il donne forme par superposition et surcharge de matière. Transcendées sous haute température, les sculptures de Jean prennent la couleur somptueuse d’un émail sombre et profond. Il mène de front une bataille avec les outils de la représentation afin d'interroger le monstrueux : qu’est-ce que le normal et l’anormal ?
