Son oeuvre se caractérise par une réflexion explicite sur le rôle de l'artiste. Vaast Colson réalise rarement des tableaux et se consacre plutôt à la performance artistique, cherchant à inciter le spectateur à la réflexion. Dans ses performances, il questionne notamment sans cesse la relation au public et s'intéresse beaucoup à la mythologie et au mystère (authentique ou pas) de l'existence de l'artiste.
