Bitterkomix est réservé aux adultes.” Même 20 ans après la fin de l’apartheid, nous ignorons presque tout des bédés sud-africaines. Les années 90 ont vu l’émergence d’une petite culture indépendante de la bédé dans le sillage de Bitterkomix, du Cap, revue aujourd’hui mondialement célèbre éditée par Anton Kannemeyer et Conrad Botes. La grande majorité des artistes de cette expo a été publiée dans Bitterkomix (sauf Sebastian Borkenhagen et les frères Tantraal). Aucune autre revue indépendante de bédé en Afrique du Sud n’a vécu aussi longtemps. Les thèmes centraux des bédés: les inégalités persistantes, la corruption politique, le sexisme mais aussi des histoires ordinaires tirées de la vie quotidienne. Autre accent : sur la tangente entre langue et poésie avec de l’art graphique et visuel. Les frères Tantraal écrivent sur la vie de tous les jours dans un style influencé par les mangas japonais, ils illustrent également les poèmes de Ronelda Kamfer. L’oeuvre de Sebastian Borkenhagen, le plus jeune auteur de l’exposition, constitue une catégorie à elle seule. L’ensemble témoigne de la diversité des styles d’une culture visuelle en plein épanouissement, qui doit se contenter d’incursions sporadiques en Europe. Les influences stylistiques varient de Hergé et Robert Crumb aux illustrations japonaises, françaises et américaines contemporaines. A ne manquer sous aucun prétexte !
