Cette année, il a 75 ans, dont 20 passés dans les rues de New York, qui ont contribué à donner à son free jazz son caractère singulier indomptable, sans compromis. Gayle jouait en rue, pour de l’argent, pourtant il ne jouait pas de jolis airs pour faire plaisir aux passants et éventuellement les séduire pour qu’ils lui donnent quelques sous. "They’d stop to hear a song, but I’m not playing songs. What I hear is the traffic. Everybody in New York hears it, but it’s really vivid in my head. Horns and children and birds, too – I hear them so clearly, they hit me so hard. The subway roar, the jackhammers. Not that they’re so loud but they stay there. The trucks and the sirens and the screeching and the hollering and the brakes, all that jagged movement, the *Arggghhhh!*" S’il y a bien une manière de décrire la musique de **Charles Gayle**, c’est ce cri-là. Une musique inspirée des bruits dans sa tête et des sentiments dans son cœur. Une musique pas facile pour l’auditeur. Une confrontation. Des états d’âme apparemment chaotiques. Des pensées musicales en vrille. Qui s’ouvre et se livre à elle est embarqué pour le trip, bercé par les influences blues et gospel. Qui cherche une assise stable est condamné à errer ou à décrocher.” (J. Revalk dans Cobra.be). Depuis 1988, il a sorti plus de 30 disques, et il a joué aux côtés de pointures comme Cecil Taylor, Sunny Murray, William Parker ou le Henry Rollins band. La collaboration avec Giovanni Barcella et Manolo Cabras est loin d’être ponctuelle: ils sont déjà partis en tournée ensemble et ils sont en train d’élaborer un projet social à long terme.
